5 years, $15 million to support survivors

After 40 years of being British Columbia’s largest organization dedicated to supporting survivors of sexualized violence, we’re looking towards the future! We are excited to announce the launch of our Rooted for Growth campaign, aimed at transforming how we support survivors of sexual violence in our city and beyond. Our goal is to raise $15 million over the next five years.

Every year, more than 10,000 survivors reach out to Salal for support, a number that continues to rise. With statistics showing that 1 in 3 women and 1 in 2 trans people will experience assault in their lifetime, it’s likely that someone you know may also need our services.

We believe that better support for survivors is possible. By addressing the root causes of sexual violence and working to reduce its impact on our communities, we can make a real difference. It’s crucial for survivors to know that they are believed and supported.

We invite you to join us in this important work, to help redefine what support for survivors of sexual violence can look like. Together, we can bring healing and joy to those who need it most. We invite you to be a part of something truly remarkable.

Transforming the lives of survivors of sexualized violence is a complex and multifaceted effort that extends beyond simply funding support services. The Rooted for Growth Campaign aims to enhance resources and empower survivors and communities in the following four ways:

Supporting Survivors

Support goes beyond someone on our team showing up when survivors need help the most. It’s making sure we provide them with safe transportation to and from the hospital, offering them nourishment before they walk into a support session, ensuring that survivors don’t have to worry about a cancellation fee if they’re unable to show up  as planned, and so much more.

Shifting Society

Sexualized violence is not just about the decisions of a perpetrator–it’s a symptom of a larger systemic issue that encourages violence. Ending sexual violence requires social change. Our robust outreach program offers workshops for service providers, training for other anti-violence organizations,and  dialogue and event facilitation among allies and prospective allies within the communities we serve.

Space and Place

Sexual violence can be a very isolating experience, and it is critical to have positive and supportive connections during the healing process. Our new sexual assault centre is a safe space for survivors to come together, share their experiences, and support one another on their journey towards healing. With new space for ceremony, coworking, and creativity, we are nurturing healing connections.

Capacity to Serve

With an active caseload over 500 at any moment, our team serves upwards of 10,000 survivors a year. In order to continue our life-saving work, care needs to begin from within. Providing staff the tools, support, skills, and space to grow with our community is critical. We adapt to changing tides, and that requires resilience as an organization.

We are the communities we serve. Most of our community of donors, staff, and volunteers are survivors themselves. While lived experience gives us key knowledge to show up in this important work, we have our eye on sustainability – we need to grow our network to position us to continue this work for years to come.
