Sexual Assault Centre – Opening Soon

A Space for Survivors to Heal

A new home made by survivors, for survivors

Survivors of sexualized violence are at the centre of the work we do. Since 1983, we’ve evolved alongside them, becoming the source of support they need – with many of The Salal staff and board being survivors ourselves. Over 40 years later, we’re finally able to open the doors to a space designed specifically to provide survivors with the support and community they deserve. It’s a place where healing can begin, where care is customized to individual needs, and where survivors can find solace and strength. so that they can heal.

We’re so excited to welcome you to the new home of Salal Sexual Violence Support Centre located in Downtown Vancouver set to open in a few short weeks.

“Survivors deserve a space where they can gather together to find connection and safety, and as we enter our 41st year of doing this work, we can finally offer something that supports them to rebuild their lives following their experience with violence.”
Dalya Israel, Executive Director, Salal Sexual Support Centre

Addressing the Surging Need For Support

The need for advocacy and support for survivors of sexualized violence has climbed steadily over the past five years. In 2022, Statistics Canada reported that sexual assault is the only violent crime that is not on the decline.  In 2023, Vancouver Police Department reported that sexual assaults have increased by 9.6% compared to 2022.

In 2023 alone, we were able to increase our support services by 95% including:

Text and Chat Support Conversations through Salal Connect

Support Circle Sessions Facilitated

Individual Counselling Sessions Facilitated

Hours Accompanying Survivors at the Hospital, Police Station & Court

A Home For Healing

Environment plays a critical role in helping someone heal from a traumatic experience. Noise, lighting, and even colour can impact the nervous system so we took a strategic approach to design a space that moves away from the classic clinic design.

Our new hub-of-care is the first of its kind and will be the foundation for us to deliver the life-saving support services we provide, free-of-charge.

Mediation Room

A space to use all five senses to find grounding pre and post session-care

Police Reporting Room

An alternative and secure way for survivors to report to police without going to the police station

Dedicated 24-Hour Crisis & Information Line Pods

A private, sound-proof space for crisis-line support workers to provide critical care over the phone

Eight Counselling Rooms

Featuring cove lighting designed to regulate the senses with space for mobility aids

Indigenous Healing Spaces

To connect Indigenous survivors with culturally appropriate care and medicine

Community Space

For hosting Indigenous ceremonies, workshops, and community training

Be Part of the Legacy

We have built a healing space where survivors find safety and know that they belong. But, we need your help to open the doors.

There are various ways for you to get involved and make a meaningful impact. You can donate to secure naming rights for our counseling rooms, ensuring your legacy is forever intertwined with the healing journey of survivors. You can also honour a survivor or add your name to our donor wall through the purchase of a ‘Square of Care’.

Local artists and businesses also have the opportunity to contribute by providing furnishings, artwork, or even designing a room themselves. Your involvement not only enriches our space but also sends a powerful message of solidarity, showing survivors that Vancouver stands united in support of safety and healing.

Together, we can create a sanctuary where survivors find solace and strength, knowing that they are valued members of our community.
