Our Journey Towards Meaningful Inclusion
In 2018, Salal created Canada’s first sexual assault support services specifically by and for trans people.
Since then, we’ve offered victims services and counselling that are developed in consultation with queer and trans community, as well as increasing trans peoples’ access to all of our services.
We have learned a lot from queer and trans survivors, and found that services designed for cis-gender heterosexual women are not always right for trans and gender diverse people.
Meaningful Inclusion Blueprint
Over the past five years, Salal has been on a learning journey with Two Spirit, trans, gender diverse, and non-binary survivors; listening, reflecting, and working together to imagine better responses for survivors.
The Meaningful Inclusion Project explored what it truly takes for anti-violence services to be affirming and inclusive.
This work was shaped by the generosity, honesty, and expertise of survivors, service providers, and community members.
Now, the research is complete, and the Meaningful Inclusion Blueprint is ready to share.
This resource offers practical guidance for organizations striving to make their spaces welcoming and responsive to the needs of all survivors.
We hold deep gratitude for everyone who shared their time, experiences, and wisdom.
Support for
Survivors
Whether you are accessing crisis support, counselling, groups, or advocacy services, you will be met with respect, dignity, and an understanding of the barriers Two-Spirit, trans, and gender-diverse survivors often face.
Our goal is to ensure that our services are not just inclusive, but affirming and responsive to the unique ways gendered violence intersects with identity.

Recognition
Recognition is a publication produced by Salal which brings together art, poetry, and writing from trans and queer survivors.
Recognition was created in the understanding that, because of stigma and pathologization of queer people, it is especially hard to talk about sexual violence in our communities.
We needed a space for queer people to talk to other queer people about how our experiences have been different than what usually gets talked about, and to imagine a path to healing that centres queer and trans survivors.
You can view our past editions of our Recognition zines online here and find our newest zine at upcoming outreach events.
