Starting June 1st, 2026 we are excited to launch a new partnership we are beginning with the UBC Psychological Services and Counselling Training Centre to offer low-cost psychotherapeutic assessments in Salal’s healing hub.
We know the idea of an “assessment” can bring up many different feelings. For some people, assessments have historically been tied to systems that pathologized trauma responses, marginalized identities, neurodivergence, disability, or ways of surviving harm. Some survivors may carry experiences of being labeled, misunderstood, disbelieved, or reduced to diagnoses rather than seen as whole people.
We want to acknowledge that history openly.
This offering is intended to feel different.
These assessments would be collaborative, relational, and survivor-centered, completed over approximately 3–5 sessions with a UBC clinician in Salal’s space. The process is designed to center the survivor’s agency, voice, context, strengths, and lived experiences throughout.
Some people may choose an assessment because they are:
• wanting language for experiences they’ve carried for a long time
• wondering about ADHD, trauma impacts, anxiety, learning differences, or other mental health experiences
• seeking clarity or validation
• hoping to better understand their strengths and struggles
• needing documentation or accommodations for work or school
• wanting support in identifying resources or treatment approaches that may feel supportive
The goal is not simply to assign labels, but to collaboratively build understanding and care around a person’s experiences and needs.
The cost ranges from approximately $75–150 depending on the complexity of the assessment. If cost feels like a barrier, we still encourage you to reach out so we can explore options together. If you are interested in learning more, you can complete a short referral form here and Salal staff can support with an assisted referral process.
